Tweetie and Twittervision also featured on Twitter, but not for money

March 24, 2009

brTweetie and Twittervision also featured on Twitter, but not for money br Earlier today we reported on what looks to be Twitter#8217;s first real foray into making money: highlighted third-party sites on Twitter#8217;s main web site. This evening, Twitter rolled out the first such deal with ExecTweets, a Twitter business executive site built by Federated Media and sponsored by Microsoft. But alongside that roll-out were two surprises: Twitter was also featuring Tweetie and Twittervision. Tweetie is a third-party iPhone app; Twittervision is a third-party site that places tweets on a world map and updates in real-time. Both are excellent apps, but is Twitter gaining anything for featuring them on the site like it is with ExecTweets? No, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone tells me. #8220;We#8217;re highlighting Tweetie and Twittervision along with ExecTweets because we want to support and promote projects that deliver variety, relevance, and most importantly, value to users,#8221; Stone wrote to me in an email. He continued, #8220;[We're] looking forward to doing more like this in the future as there is an entire ecosystem of great projects out there and this is an easy way to start.#8221; I wrote back to confirm that Twitter was not in some sort of financial relationship with Tweetie or Twittervision, and Stone confirmed that it was not. So, that#8217;s one part business, two parts fun for Twitter #8212; all in a day#8217;s work. Perhaps tomorrow it will let John Mayer use the sponsored area to write an apology to Jennifer Aniston for being too addicted to Twitter. You can find me on Twitter here along with fellow VentureBeatniks Eric Eldon, Dean Takahashi, Anthony Ha, Camille Ricketts, Dan Kaplan and Matt Marshall. We have a VentureBeat account (for our posts) as well. Disclosure: VentureBeat has an advertising relationship with Federated Media. brbriPhone to get video editing and recording brThere’s already plenty of speculation about Apple adding video recording to the predicted new iPhone model some expect this year, but the latest notion doing the rounds is that it may spring a surprise by introducing video editing too.Apple Insider says it has been told by a source that the video camera may appear on a premium iPhone model and that more than one new handset is in the works.Trimming the fatWherever the video-recording function does appear, it seems likely that it will also come with simple editing tools that allow users to at least trim and discard parts of clips that they don’t want. The Apple fanboy site also says that the company will upgrade the iPhone’s guts with better video-processing hardware to give it a boost as a gaming platform.iPhone 3.0 will tell allAlthough this is all just speculation, it does seem to fit with what we know about the new iPhone 3.0 software, such as the introduction of MMS capabilities. All should become clear when it arrives in the summer. brbrNew Twitter site folllows business execs, but the tweets will make you sleepy brA new site sponsored by Microsoft aims to lure business fans to read about their favorite celebrities. No, not Britney. ExecTweets aggregates Guy Kawasaki and Craig Newmark, in hopes of luring aspiring Twitterpreneurs. But the site’s disappointing lack of meaty tweets, from a cast of second and third-tier names, makes ExecTweets seem headed for the same dustbin as Microsoft’s Jerry Seinfeld TV spots. Check out the ExecTweets that have been voted the best so far by the site’s few readers. Who the heck are these people, you ask? In order: Cisco CTO Padmasree Warrior, Craigslist founder and customer support rep Craig Newmark, Microsoft futurist Dan Rasmus, Dell social media specialist Richard Binhammer, Digg CEO Jay Adelson, and Emergence venture capitalist Kevin Spain. Somebody DM me when Mark Cuban and Steve Ballmer show up. brbr

Macally PowerLink 3-in-1

March 24, 2009

brMacally PowerLink 3-in-1brNow here’s an interesting piece of kit. Measuring just 6.5cm long, 2.5cm wide and 1cm deep, the Macally PowerLink 3-in-1 Battery Pack/Data Sync/Flash Drive packs a lot of functionality into its tiny form. With a USB plug at one end and an iPod/iPhone dock connector at the other, it offers an emergency boost courtesy of its rechargeable lithium cell, the means to connect your iPhone or iPod to your computer for syncing or recharging, and lastly a flash drive of 2GB capacity. In a flashAs a flash drive, PowerLink is plug and play, appearing on your Mac’s Desktop as soon as you plug it in. In benchmark tests it averaged a write speed of almost 3MB per second with read speeds approaching 10MB per second. Not the fastest in town, but somewhere in the middle, which is entirely acceptable. PowerLink also functions as an emergency battery booster for your iPhone. By plugging it into your phone’s dock connector, you can give yourself an extra 25 minutes talktime. It doesn’t charge the iPhone’s battery, but supplies the extra juice direct from the PowerLink unit. It can bring a drained iPod back from the dead, too, though we wouldn’t recommend using it to extend your music or video time. It’s ideal for retrieving a contact or checking a calendar entry in an emergency, though. If your battery is completely flat it can take a few minutes for the PowerLink to switch it on, so be patient. The PowerLink unit fully charges in around three hours, either through your computer’s USB port or a dedicated USB power supply. Finally, you can use the gadget to connect your iPod or iPhone to your computer for syncing and charging, just as you would with a USB cable. Macally PowerLink 3-in-1 is a versatile device with a lot to offer the iPhone user, although it’s not really worth splashing out on if you only have an iPod. At 42 it’s a little expensive too, so keep your eye out for a price drop.brbr
